History of Conway, South Carolina

Steeped in history, Conway’s roots go back to 1734 when Robert Johnson, Royal governor of South Carolina completed the plan for the town of Kingston (Conway) and by 1735, settlers began to arrive. Many of the residents fought in the Revolutionary War. In 1785 new lines were drawn and Kingston County was created and later was changed to Horry District. The name Kingston was later changed to Conway Borough for General Robert Conway, a general in the State Militia. The Waccamaw River was the main transportation link and the village of Conway Borough was slow to grow. Planters along the Waccamaw and Pee Dee Rivers developed plantations and small farms. During the civil war, the town of Conway came under union control for a time. The name was shortened to Conway in 1883 and by 1887 the railway came through Conway.
