Surfside Beach, SC History

Surfside Beach has a somewhat mysterious history. The original property was called Arke Plantation which apparently was owned by John M. Tillman and consisted of 3200 acres, and primarily used to grow sweet potatoes. There are no official records of ownership, but it is possible that the Tillman family received a royal grant prior to the American Revolution in or around 1801 for the property. Any deeds at the time would have been stored in Columbia, SC and they were burned up during the civil war. John Tillman willed the property to his family and after his death, the family divided up the plantation and it was eventually developed and called Roach’s Beach. It was then renamed Flora Beach in the early 1920’s by new owner George J. Holiday after his daughter Floramay. It was then repurchased by new owners and in 1952 repurchased again and renamed Surfside Beach.
