Murrells Inlets, South Carolina History

The community of Murrells Inlet was named after John Murrell, who settled in Murrells Inlet in 1733. Murrells Inlet is a historic fishing village located along the Grand Strand. Established in 1772, Murrells Inlet has become one of legend, with a history of pirates and tales of bravery and tradition. The first church was established in 1737. The British troops landed in Murrells Inlet during the American Revolutionary war and destroyed many of the plantations. After the war, many of the plantations rebounded and 21 were in Murrells Inlet. Then came the civil war where union troops burned down the town again, and after the war, the town rebuilt and again had 22 rice plantations and 28 fish houses.

Tourism replaced agriculture in the 20th century and today Murrells Inlet is a popular tourist spot known for its wonderful seafood restaurants, golf courses, fishing and natural beauty of its beaches in the Garden City section.
